My 2018 year in review, and ideas for 2019
2018 is now officially over, so here are a few things, personnal and otherwise, that happened in my 2018 !
Started that channel
Obviously. Now I published my first video at the end of february. Titled "My Linux experiment with elementary OS", I edited it with Pitivi on elementary Loki, it took me ages, and the result was a mess. I rambled on at the same time I recorded, my microphone was bad, my thumbnail was even worse than the ones I make today...
Still, I enjoyed the whole process and moved on !
A few numbers
I published 147 videos in 2018. I completed two whole gaming series which were met with less than stellar results, one on the Witcher, and one on Dawn Of War Soulstorm, both running on Linux with Wine. I started one on HL2, but abandonned it half way, the lack of views and of interest in replaying that game just didn't motivate me enough. Still, they're there, if you want to watch them !
I explored elementary OS in detail, as well as KDE, GNOME, and Deepin Linux, and covered a few other topics.
My most popular video is my review of elementary OS Juno, at 62 thousand view, which is pretty amazing !
I reached 6800 subscribers at the end of the year, which, again, is fantastic ! I never expected that so many people would follow my content, seeing that I was only doing this to learn how to edit videos in the first place. You guys have been amazing and very supportive, and I really appreciate that !
Got a Twitter Account
Yup. never had used twitter before. Since one of my "switcher's guide to elementary OS" was featured by the official elementary OS account, I figured it was time to say thanks, so I opened up an account. I have a very small following, but I mainly use it to talk with people in the Linux community, so don't feel like you're missing on anything if you're not following me !
Switched to Kdenlive
After a few months, I decided I wanted to try something a bit more elaborate, so I moved to kdenlive. I doscovered a whole new world of joy... and pain. I actually nuked my Kdenlive install and took a few days to recover a usable copy, and I still have some bugs pretty frequently, but it's a fantastic open source tool. If you know of a way to contribute to it directly, let me know !
Got a sponsorship
I was fortunate enough to be contacted by Ritual Music, an awesome website for buying soundtracks for professionnal or personnal video projects, and I included them in two of my videos. No idea if it helped at all, but it was still nice, and I got a few free tracks as well, so that made me pretty happy.
Raked in the big bucks
Just kidding. Youtube has just approved the channel for monetization, so I made around 80 bucks in the whole year. When revenue has stabilized and I can estimate how much I can make out of it, I plan on donating a fair part to elementary Os, and other open source projects, which I love and want to support even more. I already give them a few coffeas each month on patreon, but since I can't code, I feel like it's a good way of contributing.
Talked with You guys
Cheesy ending, but that's still true ! You guys happened, and I must say I'm still so happy to check out the many positive comments, and the constructive criticism. I'm pretty free of trolls and insulting guys, which is nice.
What's next for 2019 ?
Well, I still have a lot more to cover. A lot of desktop environments: XFCE, LXQT, MATE, CINNAMON, BUDGIE... I want to make time for a monthly Linux news review, and maybe try my hand at some light gaming again. I'd also love to make some kdenlive tutorials, and a few behind the scenes videos. I'd love to try my hand at "camera facetime style" videos as well, but I'll need some equipment, so that's still a ways off. I also have a lot of Linux history to cover, and many things to learn, so stick with me in 2019, we're gonna have a great time !
Have a fantastic new year, and I'll see you in a few days ! Well not see you, but you know. Bye !
