My Familiar, a First Crack Friday Demo Playthrough!
Whoopis (if that is his real name) is having a very bad day. He came to consciousness falling from the sky and it's been figuratively downhill from there, although in a more literal since, he has quite the mountain to climb to get out of this world of apathy, misery, and garbage if he wants to get home. He'll have to fight piles of trash, oversized oysters (or possibly clams, no one knows the difference), other monsterous individuals, and the poor decisions of the one betoothed duck-man if he wants any chance of getting off of this massive pile of filth and fighting called Wish Island.
My Familiar has such a mood and personality to it. I know in the video I keep talking about the art and the music, but that's because they are both so different from what I'm used to seeing in games these days. Things are weird and the animations can be over the top, and the music is bold and brassy and loud, but they're both done incredibly well and create an atmosphere that I haven't seen since the weirder days of Super Nintendo games and I had no idea how much I've missed it. And while things are weird, they're incredibly well done and serve a purpose and don't cross the line into being weird for the sake of being weird. I really wish more things in all forms of entertainment media could ride that line as well as My Familiar does instead of the usual playing it safe or just getting really bizarre without any substance to make it worthwhile. Despite the mechanical aspects being a bit lackluster in the demo, with combat being pretty easy and lacking options (and pretty much always leveling up just when you need a refill on health and SP), I'm pretty in love with My Familiar. I'm a firm believer that games can focus in on certain things and let others be simple, and the story, characters, and vibe of this game is more than enough for me to view combat as a vehicle for immersion rather than the focus of what will keep me playing the game.
