The Titanfall 2 tech test is available to play for a couple of weekends... so, how is it? See my thoughts below.

So, played the tech test for a few hours on Friday and had fun with it, but not in the same way that I had fun with Titanfall 1. Unfortunately, that's the most I can really say on the game. I played Titanfall 1 for about 40 hours when it first launched and then basically never touched it again.

Titans, at least in the tech test and on the maps that were available, felt like they had a much more diminished role than in Titanfall 1. I mean, they were there, they just didn't seem as... impactful as they were in the first game. They changed the way the Titans work in terms of Titan vs. Pilot combat work. In Titanfall 1, you were able to climb on top of the Titan, rip out a panel and shoot it as much as you want. You were a big threat, I watched an old video and I got out of my Titan immediately every single time someone got on my Titan. You also had a regenerating shield in Titanfall 1, which is gone from Titanfall 2, at least in the tech test. Basically, in Titanfall 1, I wanted to be in my Titan.

In the tech test, I just left my Titan in auto. I didn't feel like me being in my Titan was really that helpful. My Titan easily accomplished more being in auto mode compared to anything I would've been able to do with me in it. The focus felt like it shifted more to pilot vs. pilot with Titans just kind of being there. That's why a lot of people are saying it has more of a Call of Duty vibe this time around...I mean, it always did to an extent, but Titanfall 1 did have its own feel to it compared to the tech test.

Burn cards no longer exist, replaced by a sort of killstreak system and Titans are no longer on a timer, but are also on a sort of kill/scorestreak system. This didn't really bother me too much because I'm a decent enough player to get Titans and stuff at least a couple of times per game, but in Titanfall 1, Titans were just on a timer and you were guaranteed to get one at some point. That guarantee doesn't really exist anymore and that makes a lot of players upset. The burn cards I'm pretty indifferent to.

The maps felt too big without NPCs. Two of the three modes, of which there is no Attrition by the way, has no NPCs. The mode that did, Bounty, spread them out super far apart. The first wave is right in the middle and that's good, there's skirmishes between the two teams. Then, a Titan spawns in the middle, also fine. Then the next two rounds split the spawns of the NPCs into two points, A and B. Problem is that they're on completely opposite sides of the map, so one team will go to one node, another to another and then you're just farming NPCs. Push them together? The map just felt big for big sake.

Keep in mind this is just the tech test and it's not final. But, there's improvements to be made, that's for sure. I don't think people were really looking a re-imagining of the original game, because the original game was really fun, it's not like it wasn't. They didn't need to make so many changes simply for change sake, Titanfall 1 worked. Might not've been the most popular, but it worked, it wasn't bad. This feels like Call of Duty crept in a little too much. Don't get me wrong, still plenty of fun with it, but it's also something that I'd probably drop sort of quickly. I'd get my fill of it, my friends would get their fill of it and we'd move on. I'm not sure what they can do to give it that lasting power, but I think just making Titanfall 1 have MORE is what people really wanted.
