The idea behind what I am going to call "Mothershiping" is to have a sentry that is defending an objective that is not easily spammed or accessible by enemy spies.
You just need to set a teleporter exit by the area, and from there switch to a more offensive loadout so you can assist your team, and then teleport around so you can fix, reload, and defend your sentry when needed, as well as it being useful to get yourself to different locations.
On swiftwater, I was using to to swap between a RR and shotgun loadout, which I then change to FJ once my sentry got a few kills.
