Mysterious Fortress In The Atlantic Ocean With a Strange History - Fort Boyard. Between the le d'Aix and le d'Oleron islands in Pertuis d'Anthos (Пертюи-д'Антьош) on the west coast of France is the small 19th century Fort Boyard. Built in 1857, it was supposed to protect the approach to the harbour of Rochefort (Рошфора). Due to the long construction time, it was already outdate at the time of commissioning. It is currently used for... TV game shows.
The idea to build a fort in the channel of Pertuis d'Anthos dates back to the 17th century, more precisely to 1666. Due to its location, Rochefort harbour was an easy target for a possible attack from the sea. Therefore, the French decided to strengthen the approach to the port.
It was planned to build a line of forts from the island d'Oleron (Fort de Somonar) to the il d'Ex Fort de la Rad). Due to the short range of the guns of those times, the artillery of the two main forts could not cover the entire approach to the port, so it was necessary to build additional small forts to fill the gap. This is how Fort Enet and Fort Boyard were created.
Although the first plans for the construction of Fort Boyard were ready in 1692, due to the anticipated costs, the work was not started. The situation began to change after 1757, when the British attacked the Ile d'Aix. The plans for the construction of the fort were prepared again, but this time the work was not started either. But the idea was still circulating among the military and decision-makers.
In 1801, the idea of building a fort came back again. This was pushed by Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1803, plans were drawn up, materials and workers were collected, but in 1809 the work was stopped. Finally, in 1837 (or, according to other sources, 1848) the construction of the fort was resumed due to growing tensions between France and Britain.
