Mystery Object: Is a Quasi-Moon Really Circling Earth?
203Here we go again. Once more, our Earth will have a second Moon for a couple of months, a new natural satellite. Occasionally, an asteroid from more or less remote areas of our solar system approaches Earth on its journey and gets captured for a short period.
This is what will happen to 2024 PT5, the rather unromantic name of the future small Moon of Earth, which will enter our planet's area of interest on September 29 and accompany it for a couple of months until November 25.
No need to worry, it won't crash into our planet. The laws of celestial mechanics are very clear, and this small rocky body, just a few meters in diameter, has no chance of falling on our heads.
An extraordinary event? According to the media, it seems so... Almost everyone is excitedly saying, "Earth now has two moons!"
