The USS Indianapolis, a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, gained tragic renown during World War II. Serving as a vital component of several Pacific campaigns, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the ship played a crucial role in delivering components for the atomic bomb that would later be dropped on Hiroshima. However, its fate took a dark turn when, after completing this secret mission, it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945, sinking rapidly. The crew faced harrowing days adrift in the Philippine Sea, enduring dehydration, exposure, and shark attacks. Only 316 of the nearly 1,200 crew members survived, making it one of the deadliest naval disasters in U.S. history.
