NES Alphanumeric! #015: AMAGON
I write young adult science fiction and fantasy stories (Novels: FAIR COIN, THE SILENCE OF SIX), and I love playing 8-bit Nintendo games. But it's hard to find time for both; over the years, I've collected more than 250 NES games, yet I still haven't played most of them for long—or even once!
POST-STREAM THOUGHTS: Despite its lackluster reputation, I found AMAGON to be quite interesting and playable. Although I died frequently and didn't make it far, it felt more like it was my fault; it's a very difficult game, but so were many NES titles, and with practice I think I could progress to the end. However, the controls and mechanics do take some getting used to. Far from a "hidden gem" on the NES, but also not a complete throwaway. I think I'll revisit it again some time.
