A playthrough of Rare and Tradewest’s 1993 crossover beat ’em up for the NES, Battletoads / Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team.

Two of gaming’s most iconic duos team up in this NES crossover event—Rash, Zitz, and Pimple from Battletoads join forces with Billy and Jimmy Lee from Double Dragon to take down the evil Dark Queen and the Shadow Warriors. Together, they’ll brawl their way through city streets, outer space, and the Dark Queen’s lair in an all-out fight to save the world.

Developed by Rare and published by Tradewest, the NES version blends the wild, stage-changing gameplay of Battletoads with the straightforward brawling of Double Dragon. Each mission offers unique challenges—one moment you’re knocking thugs off rooftops, the next you’re dodging asteroids or rappelling down massive shafts. Players can choose any of the five characters at the start of each mission, each with their own attack animations and strengths.

While not as brutally difficult as the original Battletoads, this game still packs a challenge with tight platforming sections, aggressive enemies, and bosses that require quick reflexes and pattern recognition. The mix of varied levels, co-op play, and over-the-top attacks (like smashing enemies into the screen) make it one of the most memorable NES beat ’em ups.

Fun fact: The NES port of Battletoads / Double Dragon was released alongside versions for the SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy—but the NES version holds its own with fluid animation, detailed sprites, and smooth gameplay.
