In Metal Mech the player controls both a human and a massive mech. The mech unit looks similar to the ED-209 from the robocop series (not related to my knowledge). The game play is similar to that of Blaster Master (again not related). The player will explore the destroyed city looking for power up items for both himself and the mech. There are several stages to complete and an adept player could complete the game in about an hour. There is also no notable issues with dying. If the player dies he respawns at the mech, if the mech dies it respawns at the start of the level. And from what I can tell there is no loss on player death. So just explore and enjoy!
