New 2023 BMW M2 in Brooklyn Grey Explained
Incorporating a plethora of major components from the M4, alongside the mechanically analogous parts from the M3 sedan, BMW has recently fortified the M2 with twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engines. This particular application of the S58 mill produces a robust 453 horsepower, despite the estimated curb weight of the new car increasing significantly to approximately 3800 pounds. Remarkably, the horsepower provided in this model is only 20 less than the standard M4, yet 48 more than the previous generation M2 Competition's S55 inline-six, which itself provided an even stronger dosage than the limited-edition 444-hp M2 CS.
The M2's transmission options include the standard six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF, which replaces the previous seven-speed dual-clutch unit. Both transmission options have received a combined fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg from the EPA, which is approximately equivalent to the previous-gen M2 Competition. Intriguingly, the EPA has mentioned that the manual gearbox option will travel an additional mile per gallon on the highway, thereby providing further impetus for the selection of the DIY gearbox. However, testing of the automatic transmission option is still pending.
