8Crowdsourcing can be a double-edged sword, but it worked out pretty well for Ford as fans helped to create and name a new Puma ST special edition.
More than 275,000 votes were cast over ten days on the automaker’s social media channels, and fans voted on a number of details including the exterior paint color, brake caliper color, decal type and scuff plate inscription – among other things.
In the end, they decided the special edition should have a black exterior with red brake calipers as well as racing stripes. The model also sports “ST” badging and bronze wheels.
Fans didn’t have much say about the interior, but they determined the model should have grey seatbelt stitching and “Puma” branded door sill plates. They’ll be joined by bronze contrast stitching and faux carbon fiber trim.
While one would assume the model would be called the Fordy McFordFace, the company was smart enough to only give fans a choice between two names. In the end, Puma ST Gold Edition won out over Puma ST 24K Edition.
The special edition will be available later this year in “limited numbers,” and it will be powered by a 1.5-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine that produces 197 hp (147 kW / 200 PS) and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque. This will enable the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 6.7 seconds.
Ford of Europe’s director of design, Amko Leenarts, said “The number of votes cast shows just how enthusiastic our customers are – and that they have excellent taste.” He added, “It’s all in the details, and with this special edition, our fans have configured a truly desirable product.”
