Dungeonfell is a new tactical team-based roguelike that puts players in control of a group of Delvers venturing into ever-changing dungeons. With a mix of turn-based combat, strategic team-building, and an overarching mystery surrounding the corruption lurking in the depths, the game demands patience, careful planning, and adaptability. Despite its challenges, Dungeonfell delivers a rewarding experience that keeps players coming back for more.

Story and Setting:

Rather than overwhelming players with an intricate narrative, Dungeonfell opts for a more subtle approach. The world is in peril, overrun by monstrous entities, and transformed into a sprawling, corrupted dungeon. Your task is straightforward: assemble a team of Delvers, retrieve three keystones, and restore order. While the game doesn’t dive deep into lore or character backstories, it offers enough intrigue to keep players engaged. Discovering bits of hidden lore as you progress adds a layer of mystery, complementing the roguelike gameplay loop.

Gameplay Mechanics!

The core of Dungeonfell’s appeal lies in its turn-based combat and strategic decision-making. Players control a team of three Delvers, each with unique abilities, strengths, and roles. Combat revolves around an action bar that determines turn order, allowing players to plan their moves in advance. A particularly useful feature is the ability to view upcoming enemy attacks, their intended targets, and potential effects such as poison or burn. This transparency encourages tactical play, rewarding those who carefully plan their actions.

Each Delver has four distinct abilities, and instead of traditional mana, the game employs an action point (AP) system. Every turn, heroes recover half of their maximum AP, but stronger skills require more points. If a hero lacks sufficient AP, they can tap into a shared pool called Team Action Points, which is replenished by weakening or defeating enemies. This system adds an extra layer of depth, as players must decide when to use standard attacks and when to invest in more powerful moves.

A key mechanic prevents players from spamming basic attacks by increasing their AP cost after each use. This restriction resets at the start of a new round, encouraging varied attack strategies. Additionally, spells provide offensive, defensive, healing, or support abilities, but they come with significant cooldowns, making their use a strategic decision.

Enemies also feature an interesting mechanic—each has a segmented health bar with boxes beneath it. Every successful attack depletes a box, and if all are removed before an enemy’s turn, they lose their action. These segments regenerate at the start of the enemy’s next turn, forcing players to time their attacks wisely to interrupt dangerous abilities.

Progression and Replayability!

Dungeonfell’s structure is divided into three chapters, each with multiple acts, culminating in challenging boss fights. Runs consist of various encounters, with players choosing their next battle from a branching map. Each choice presents different difficulties and rewards, such as health restoration, currency, or powerful artifacts. Upon completing a fight, players can upgrade one skill per Delver, though options are randomized, ensuring no two runs feel the same.

Artifacts and relics add another layer of progression. Certain relics persist through the run, granting buffs like increased AP recovery or bonus damage. At the end of each run, players earn currency and unique artifacts that act as progression gates, preventing early-game exploits while rewarding long-term investment.

Despite being limited to three Delvers per run, players have access to a roster of 15 distinct heroes, each categorized by role—tank, healer, damage dealer, etc. Delvers don’t have customizable base stats, but their abilities can be enhanced through a structured skill tree system. These upgrades may modify attacks, such as adding poison effects or multi-hit capabilities, while also unlocking new spells and relics for future runs.

Conclusion!

Dungeonfell is a compelling tactical roguelite that balances deep strategic gameplay with high replayability. Its turn-based combat system, action point mechanics, and diverse team-building options make every run a unique experience. While the story serves as a backdrop rather than the main focus, the game’s atmosphere and world-building add just enough intrigue to keep players engaged. Minor UI issues and occasional bugs aside, Dungeonfell is a must-try for fans of tactical RPGs and roguelites alike. If you enjoy thoughtful, strategic combat and the thrill of incremental progression, this game deserves a spot on your playlist.
