Note: I DID NOT FIND THIS OUT ON MY OWN, I don't know who the first person was to find this out but I just originally found this on GameFAQs' message board. I figured if no one knew yet, this may help a few people!

I wouldn't start this with a small mushroom... which is what happened to me originally lol

Basically get the gold flower that is at the start of the level in the "not so random" item box and then head to where the goombas come out of the pipes, from then on you will be able to farm coins until you run out of time! (I still hate dying so I usually just rush to the goal anyways xD)

Some people have said they have even gotten over 9,000 in one go! (WHAT 9,000 THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE... *gets shot at*)
