1980s has had a big update regarding how befriending works. Ten generic tasks are now shared through the 70+ population of students. This is such a good change in my opinion even if the tasks do feel way too much like a copy and paste. I think it's fine for 1980s mode, I just hope for 202X, tasks will involve way more gameplay.
