Emergency teams continued working at the scene of the deadly train accident in Tempi, near Larissa on Thursday.
Rescuers could be seen clearing debris at the site where a passenger and freight train collided, while local authorities stated that the death toll rose to 57 on Thursday, while dozens are being treated at hospitals.
The disaster sparked anger over railway safety in Greece leading to protests in Thessaloniki, Athens and Larissa where demonstrators clashed with police. The country's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the accident happened due to a 'tragic human error'.
The local station chief has been arrested, while Greek transport minister Kostas Karamanlis resigned from his post citing lack of respect by the government. The tragedy happened on Tuesday when a passenger train carrying around 350 people collided with a freight train as it left a tunnel near Larissa.
