Next Division Rivals
The Dodgers return home to face their next homestate division rivals, the San Francisco Giants. With one of the deepest rivalries in Major League Baseball, the embers of competition between the Dodgers and the Giants have been stoked by fans, managers, and players alike for over a hundred years.
The two teams met in 1889 in a previous iteration of the World Series when they were the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, the Giants clinching the win with a 6-3 score. The rivalry between the two teams was ignited by social tensions in the city between the elites and the working class, causing Dodgers-Giants games to become rowdy affairs with brawls both on and off the field. Despite the owners' personal feud, they saw the business potential in the sporting drama. When the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles in 1957, owner Walter O'Malley persuaded Horace Stoneham to bring the Giants to San Francisco. The Dodgers and the Giants have met nearly 2,500 times, with the Giants edging out a narrow lead in the series. The Giants have also had the biggest wins in the series, taking down the Dodgers with an 18-run lead three different times.
