when you destroy enemies, damage bosses and cancel bullets, you get pink items that fill up your shield bar, up to five levels
each level also multiplies your piv by 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 respectively, and whenever you break a shield, you lose all your levels and that multiplier goes back to 1
EXCEPT if you reached the final shield level, that one fixes the multiplier at 8 and puts a little star in your ui
the requirement for tlb is to bring that star into the end of the game, and since you need to not break the shield for that, you also gotta do no miss for the most part of the game, which is pretty tense
you also get a ton of score on the way to tlb because of the multipliers
