On April 1st, 2013, my friend Gar and I were talking after he had played through Ninja Ryukenden III for the Famicom. For whatever reason (laziness perhaps?), we just so happened to have left the game on after Gar had finished it and boy are we ever glad that we did!

About twenty minutes went by, so we thought, when suddenly Gar noticed that the ending screen had changed! A secret message came up: "To be continued Ninja Ryukenden- II".

This confirms that Ninja Ryukenden III takes place in between part 1 and 2, which was more vaguely mentioned in the Ninja Gaiden III NES instruction manual.

We were both pretty surprised by this and thought that the game was playing a joke on us or something, given the day that this occurred on (April Fools), but it was actually real!

I said that we should leave the game on for a bit longer, just to see if anything extra would come up, but unfortunately the game reset itself about twenty minutes later.

My curiosity led me to test this out on Ninja Gaiden III for the NES as well. Just over 36 minutes following the ending screen, the game merely reset itself (the footage is also included in this video).

So not only was our version made more challenging than the original Japanese version, but Tecmo also had the nerve to completely remove the ending easter egg!

Anyway, for those of you who would like to see the secret ending message in Ninja Ryukenden III for the Famicom for yourselves, here is what you must do:

After finishing Ninja Ryukenden III, leave the game on the ending screen for just over 18 minutes. The secret "To be continued" message will then appear at this point in time. Leave the game on for an additional 18 minutes in order for the game to reset itself.

For the NES version, leave the game on the ending screen for just over 36 minutes in order for the game to reset itself.

I have since tried to do this on other games that seemingly remain on the ending screen after the game has been finished, but unfortunately nothing special happened. These are the other games that I had tried thus far:

-Disney's DuckTales 2 (NES) = the game remained on the ending screen after 40 minutes of leaving it on there.

-Gekitou Pro Wrestling (Famicom) = the game remained on the ending screen after 40 minutes of leaving it on there.

-Jekyll Hakase no Houma ga Toki (Famicom) = the game remained on the Bad ending screen after 40 minutes of leaving it on there and I could care less about trying this out on the Good ending hahaha!

-Ninja Ryukenden (Famicom) = the game reset itself after just over 18 minutes.

-Ninja Ryukenden II: Ankoku no Jashinken (Famicom) = the game remained on the ending screen after 40 minutes of leaving it on there.

There are probably other games that seemingly remain on the ending screen for all of eternity, but you just never know, so test your patience and you might get lucky like Gar and I randomly did!

As for Tecmo, why would you guys think that it would be cool to keep such a random easter egg so secret for all of these years (since 1991)? No one in their right mind would leave the game on for so damn LONG after completing it!

Why did you do this to us, Tecmo?! Is there also a secret Sound Test mode that you haven't yet told us about, like with the first two Ninja Ryukenden/Ninja Gaiden games? Please speak up, it's never too late!

Played by Gar and Daniel "DTysonator" Teixeira on an original NES while using a Famicom game converter and regular controller.
