This game is the first in the main Mario sports games, and it is developed by Camelot, the same company that did Mario Tennis, and there was Mario Golf for the Game Boy Color, which was compatible with this game through the Transfer Pak.
This game only has just Mario characters, there are other characters that only appeared in this game, like Plum, she is well-balanced, and this is the only game she appeared in, she did appear as a Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
For some reason, Mario isn't even on the starting roster, despite the game being called Mario Golf, to unlock characters, like Luigi, Yoshi, Wario, Bowser, and many others, in a mode called Get Character, where if you win against them, you can unlock that character. There are a bunch of other modes like Ring Shot, Speed Golf, Stroke Play, and Mini-Golf.
As for other games in the series, there is Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, which released on the GameCube in 2003, and it got a counterpart for the Game Boy Advance called Mario Golf: Advance Tour in 2004. Mario Golf would not get another game until 2014 for the 3DS, that one is Mario Golf: World Tour, and very recently, we got Mario Golf: Super Rush for the Nintendo Switch last year.
