An overview of the legendary Nintendo World Championships 1990 including a full playthrough, an explanation of secrets and tricks used by actual contestants during the competition, as well as an unboxing of the reproduction cartridge that can be bought online.

An epic tournament hosted by Nintendo in 1990 to find out who in America was the greatest of them all at playing NES video games, Nintendo searched the country for contestants to invite to Universal Studios in California for an epic event that would decide things once and for all. Despite almost 30 years passing since this challenge was conducted, the tournament is far from being forgotten.

A big reason for this is the holy grail of video game collecting, a cartridge of video gaming lore that only a select few have their hands on, the Nintendo World Championships 1990 contest cartridge. Only about 70 of the grey NWC cartridges exist, as a very small number were given out to contestants who competed in the tournament, and a select few were also obtained by those such as Howard Phillips who worked at Nintendo. The gold Nintendo World Championships cartridges are even rarer, as the only way to obtain them was by winning a contest hosted by Nintendo Power magazine. In all about 25 of the gold version exist.

As the years go on these cartridges are becoming more difficult to find, and as a result are quickly rising in price, with both versions currently being worth thousands of dollars. For those who do not believe they will ever be able to get their hands on the real thing, there is the reproduction cartridge from RetroUSB.com which plays exactly like the original, although puts the ability to experience the thrill of the competition within the reach of anyone! You can find the page for the repro cart here: https://www.retrousb.com/product_info.php?cPath=29&products_id=62&osCsid=cb786de18f1d6c0408b4d4ceded55b5c

Putting the cartridge aside, even the competition game itself is incredibly interesting! It's a mad dash to complete a challenge in Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris within a time limit of 6 minutes and 21 seconds, all while collecting as many points as you possibly can along the way! Thor Aackerlund won the Nintendo World Championships 1990 by scoring over 2.8 million points. Let's see how close we can get to that!

So whether you're familiar with that NWC 1990 or this is just your first time hearing about it, I hope you enjoy this video which tells you just about all you need to know about what it is and how it works. You no longer need to be Pat the NES Punk or the Angry Video Game Nerd to appreciate what this game has to offer!
