Nishi Reviews: Fallout 3 Game of the Year
Reading out my written review for Fallout 3 - GOTY.
Written Review:
Ah here is one of the best open world games I have played. The action is great; story starts out simple but becomes epic, and so much more. So many varieties of weapons are at your disposal, and each has its positives and negatives towards enemies. You can tell the destruction that happened centuries ago, and it’s cool to see the detail on everything in the world.
You start the game being born into the wasteland, and you choose how you will look later on (AKA. The main game), and the people react to your choices (I.E. “what cute baby girl” etc). AS you grow up you learn that you’re in vault 101 and no one leaves and no one enters (yeah pretty obvious what’s going to happen, but cool none the less). From there you take a test called the G.O.A.T, you get your pip boy, and when you turn 19 your dad leaves and your journey starts.
The graphics are pretty well done, while I have seen more detailed people in other games, it has its own look. The looks of the variety of weapons are well done, to swords with flames, or a mini nuke launcher. If you own the PC version than you have the ability to ramp up the graphics, and it makes the game look better (obviously) and the distance you see goes further.
With good graphics the random monsters you run across have their own unique flare to them and this brings the environment to life. When it comes to the environment, you have cities made out of pure scrap metal (Planes, atom bombs, you name it), irradiated waters and lands, fancy hotels, to the entire dc area destroyed.
One cool thing they have in the game is radio stations in the pip boy. This adds something to listen to while you blow away ghouls. You can listen to really old USA tunes on one of the main radio stations; The other one (GNR FTW) you can listen to 1950’s era of music with three dog dj’ing. The choices you make and the karma you have makes his announcements change to things that are happening in the world. Without the radio station’s playing, the theme of the wasteland is low key and bleak, but that just adds to immersion of it. The fun fire and sounds og your weapons hitting the enemies are great, and explosions sound amazing.
The gameplay is extremely fun; from running around through miles of underground subway systems, anything popping up to try and kill you to fighting armies of Super Mutants that yell stuff at you when there trying to kill you. The variety of weapons makes killing beasts and people in the game extremely fun, nothing like killing enemies with a chainsaw knife. The fact that you can run into any random events through the world, makes it feel even more realistic.
Along with the game you are given five DLC titles, which are all great to play though with nice rewards. You go through a military simulation, go into a spaceship, visit Pittsburg, take a ferry to Point lookout, and continuing the game after beating it. I felt that each of these was worth it for ten dollars each, and now you can get everything in one complete package.
I’ve spent hundreds of hours on this game, and it is extremely fun to play, and I say that everyone should pick up this title.
Length: MMO’s excluded, this is the most played game I have ever played. One play through on my PS3 is at about 169 hours right now, and I still haven’t seen everything. I played this over 400-500 hours through the three systems I played this on. You can play through this in way less of the time, but I like exploring so much, and this game was addicting and fun to get achievement/trophies from.
Note to PS3 Users: I recommend not buying this title for the PS3. I have had to reset my PS3 over 50 times in the time of playing this game and getting the platinum trophy. When I didn’t reset it, the game slowed down A LOT and this got annoying fast. I know it isn’t my PS3 doing this, since I’ve beaten a lot of other games on my PS3 problem free. This could be my disk as well but I doubt it If you have no other choice I recommend renting it first, or buy it on another system if you have the choice. I didn’t base this review on the PS3 version since it would get a very low score since it was annoying with all the glitches.
