This game utilizes full wait ATB, but it also allows you to pass time in battle by holding the shift key, even if one or more characters are ready to act. However, if your character is guarding with a full ATB gauge while time passes, they will still reduce damage like normal. This means you can precisely prolong your guard until you find the best time to act, which is useful against curse-inflicting bosses and grand spells. However, you're in even more danger of getting your guard broken, so try not to abuse it.
