In the "Age of Ancients", a primordial fire known as the First Flame disrupted a previously unchanging world by bringing change and disparity, including a distinction between life and death. Four powerful "Lord Souls" were found within the First Flame, and three beings, the god Gwyn, the Witch of Izalith, and the dead Nito, used their respective Lord Souls to lead a war against the Everlasting Dragons that ruled supreme; Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own kind by revealing the weakness in the dragon's supposed immortality to their enemies, and the fall of the dragons marked the beginning of a new, thriving era: the Age of Fire.
