A quick way to test if a motor has failed to a short. It works on most pieces with a rotating section. Electricity seeks its fastest way to source and a short is faster than going through all the other components within the unit which is why nothing works. When you rotate the piece it changes the short causing the unit to find a new path causing momentary functionality of lights sound and in some cases, the motor with spin on its own for a short period.
Make sure you do not force it if it will not move, some pieces have a gear box that cannot run backwards meaning the motion must be initiated be the motor and not the spinning part of the unit.
