Inspired by the fact I picked up "Rappin' Rodney" at a local store, I decided to do a brief history of novelty rap records from the 1980's highlighting the two I own -- the Rodney Dangerfield album and a single by Shawn Brown a/k/a Rappin' Duke. Notorious B.I.G. once said "Remember Rappin' Duke? DA HA, DA HA." I actually DID remember because I had owned that single since high school and still have it to this day, although I'm sure because of his appeal as a stand up comedian, "Rappin' Rodney" is the better remembered song. The novelty rap song didn't come and go in the 1980's though -- novelty hits like "Because I Got High" by Afroman were (and are) still a thing in the 21st century.
