Star Trek Discovery and Star Trek Picard changed its lore of the Star Trek universe to be more dark, broken, and violent. This was definitely not the view Gene Roddenberry's view of the future was about.

Star Trek can and has told stories which were dark, or had violent and depressing episodes, despite having a more positive view of the setting and humanity.

Hopefully, Strange New Worlds will be a return to form. But without a change in producers and writers, Kurtzman-trek will probably be just as dark and violent.
