The shadow was amateur criminologist Lamont Cranston. He had learned “the hypnotic power to cloud men’s minds so that they cannot see him”. The opening to the show, “Who knows … what evil … lllllurks … in the heart of men? … The Shadow knows! His “friend and companion, the lovely Margo Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the voice of the invisible Shadow belongs”. It is shortly before midnight and commissioner Weston strides in to his office at police headquarters followed closely by Lamont Cranston and an agitated young lady, Carol Arton. The atmosphere is charged with tension. Angel Nolan has created a one-man crime wave and is about to be executed at midnight and Miss Arton for one, hopes that he burns in hell for murdering her father in cold blood. Just after midnight Angel Nolan’s sister Angela Nolan calls Lamont Cranston and tells him that for sending her brother to the chair he’s is going to wish he’d never been born…
