One Finger Death Punch for Android is like a love letter to old Kung Fu movies from back in the day. You play as this mystical stick figure who, for whatever reason, is being attacked by other stick figures in a large succession. To survive the endless onslaught, you’ll have to string together large combos of insanely difficult button combinations.
Okay, I was exaggerating a bit there at the end. The game requires you to punch left or punch right; nothing too extravagant about that. But you will be stringing them together in large combos.
I’ve played this game on Steam, and it was fun for what it was. It’s entertaining to watch, and simple enough that you can really just watch yourself play. It’s kind of a like a minimalist’s take on a spectacle fighter. You do a lot of cool, flashy moves; but it only takes one button to push.
As much fun as I had with this on Steam, I had the opposite experience on my phone. It’s the same game, no doubt, and it’s still really fun. But it suffers from the same fate as so many mobile games - greed.
You can play a total of 5 stages before you run out of stamina and have to wait 5 minutes for one to refill. You’ll be waiting for almost an hour if you want to wait for all 5. The whole purpose of this is to get you to purchase more stamina, but it’s absolutely insane. Most games give you at least enough time to keep playing for more than 5 minutes.
The progression system and items are still fun, and still there. As you play you collect experience points and will find items that you can equip to make yourself stronger. You’ll face new enemies that do add a bit of extra complexity to the formula, but still keep the experience simple enough to be enjoyable.
Overall, One Finger Death Punch is hard to recommend on a mobile platform. The game often gets in the way of itself and you never have enough time to enjoy playing it without it trying to reach into your pockets. It’s a fun game, but corrupted by greed.
