One important characteristics of the representative elements ( \( s \) - and p-block elements) is the unique behaviour of the first element present in each group. It differs in most of its characteristics from the rest of the members present in the same group. Lithium (Li), the first member of alkali metals is no exception. Because of extremely small size, high ionisation enthalpy and non-availability of \( d \)-electrons in the valence shell, it exhibits certain typical characteristics. For example, it is quite hard whereas the alkali metals are so soft that they can be cut with a knife. Similarly, it reacts with water very slowly whereas the other members of the family are quite reactive.
Sodium reacts with water more vigorously than lithium because :
(A) it has higher atomic mass
(B) it is more electropositive
(C) it is more electronegative
(D) it is a metal.
