This is an arrangement of Nobuo Uematsu's theme, "One Winged Angel," from Square's 1997 PlayStation game, Final Fantasy VII. I have arranged it for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES console.

I had to simplify a lot of the parts and instrumentation to make this work on the SNES, whether I kept the vocals or not. Since I needed a small, consolidated instrument pack to work with in order to fit those voice samples in reasonable quality - they're appx. 10Khz, cut down from the original's 22Khz recordings - I retooled the overall sound quite a bit, going for a sorta maniacal, insane carnival fun house idea. It seemed appropriate for the likes of Kefka or Sephiroth. I mean, caliope organs sound uber creepy. At least, I think so. Especially combined with that funky synth lead (which I sampled from Living On Video, anyone remember that tune?) and those hardcore bassy toms. Really, I just wanted to try to do something besides just replicating the original track. More than anything, though, this was an experiment to push myself to do harder things and learn from them. Believe me, I harbor no Illusions about the compromises that needed to be made to smash a track like this on to the SNES. I had a blast making it, though, and thought it might make for a more interesting view than a mere cut-down replica.
