OpenRails - Nene Valley Railway Wansford To Peterborough (MSTS)
Note: For the viewers enjoyment horn and whistle sounds are patched and set to the correct pitch. For some reason when installing the NVR route into OpenRails the Whistle sounds go incredibly high pitched when they shouldn't, this was never an issue with MSTS and i have simply lowered the pitch for the whistles and horns so they are letting out the correct sound as heard in the original MSTS addon, i may release a patch for all the Nene Valley Railway addon users who play with it in OpenRails.
So lets get to business, The Nene Valley Railway route addon for Microsoft Train Simulator is it good? well the simple answer to this is no it isn't and it is a great shame as the addon was always looked at as being very promising, As a child my parents bought me this addon online for around 25 pounds and i had no end of issues with it crashing and not working on certain PC's, The overall route itself has some very nice detail especially the preserved section of line which is undoubtedly the main focal point for the addon, however the developers at First Class Simulations and The Heritage Collection thought it would be a good idea to merge a 1950s/1960s era route to Blitzworth into it as well which was a rather silly idea as it does not work well at all especially in the preservation scene.
The locomotives and rolling stock are very basic and most don't even have there own custom sound sets making use of the default MSTS Flying Scotsman chuff sounds which sound like they have been recorded from a Hornby TTS Sound Decoder. The thrash sounds of the diesel locomotives are also of terrible quality and sound like somebody blowing raspberry's down a microphone, To top it off the Class 14s don't work in OpenRails and for some reason generate errors so even in this modern era re-released MSTS game the addon doesn't perform how it should.
The Nene Valley Railway to this day stands as one of the worst and poorly performing addons for the MSTS platform but it certainly marks a key point in the history of Train Simulation.
With MSTS no longer being playable on windows, anyone wanting to play this old retro simulator shall have to download OpenRails which is basically a remastered/revisited version of this classic game making it compatible to run on modern day computers. It can be downloaded from the link below, it is recommended to have a copy of Microsoft Train Simulator installed to your computer for this game.
