Barboarossa was the greatest (and ugliest) land war ever fought, a front with 10 million men fighting (Germany 3m v Soviet 7m). Today we learn that the most useful tactic, as it was in real life, is the good old encirclement, using panzers and blitz warfare - at least for a while it went very well.
In the FIRST 3 months of the operation, the Germans using the tactic (they call it Kesselschlacht) they capture well over 1 million soviet forces. Some of these men would later switch sides and assist the Germans in basic logistcal operations, although the majority would die in captivity. The having a million extra mouths to feed on supply lines already strained was almost impossible, and only a small percentage would return home after hostilities ended.
