After recording this video, I emptied the main tank of the XR5 and loaded fuel modules in the external bay to see how many it would take to fill up the main tank. The first 17 you load will empty entirely into the main tank. The 18th module will be almost entirely emptied as well, but will have some fuel left in it.
Since I had about 80% fuel left in the main tank at the end of this journey, then I estimate I could have made the trip with At Least 14 fewer fuel modules. (18 * .79 = 14.22). But also keep in mind that each extra module you carry that you don't need reduces your overall dV significantly. So it's likely that I wasted an entire fuel module (maybe even 2) just to carry extra fuel that I didn't need. So I may have been able to make the trip with 15 or 16 or 17 fewer fuel modules.
I don't really like coasting in entirely on fumes though, so if I were to make the trip again, I'd bring 14 fewer fuel modules with me as the starting point.
