Orbiter 2010 - Learn With Me #4 (Part 3) - Deorbit, Reentry, and Landing Space Shuttle Atlantis
This video was recorded Saturday, January 5, 2013
This is a scenario that comes with the standard Orbiter 2010 installation. It's the "Atlantis docked at ISS" scenario in the Space Shuttle Atlantis folder.
In this video, I am back with the Space Shuttle Atlantis, once again trying to learn how to deorbit and land. This was a limited success. I made it down through the atmosphere without experiencing too much heating, and I made it over to the base with plenty of energy left to reach the runway and land.
The main problem with this attempt was that I rushed the landing and ended up touching down pretty far down the runway, and my touchdown speed was a bit over 7 m/s. I don't believe that would be considered a crash, but I think it would be a pretty jarring touchdown.
In this third attempt, I learned that deorbiting 3/4's around from the base is a pretty good starting point, but I think it might be a tad late. I felt like I was having to push the shuttle down into the atmosphere more than I would like. I think a full orbit would probably work. I think I just messed up the 2nd attempt by letting the shuttle get too low in the atmosphere too early on in the reentry phase. That caused me to lose a lot of energy too early on.
If I try this again, I think I would split the difference and deorbit somewhere between 1 full orbit, and 3/4.

Common questions I get: What screen recording software do you use? What joystick do you use? What add-ons do you use? Where can I find the XR2 Ravenstar? Where do I download Orbiter? And much, much more. It's all answered in the FAQ I set up at this link (the link is a google document):
