Orbus Mage overview January Stress Test VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Meet the Mage. The most consistent member of the Orbus VR class roster.
Instead of the standard press a button, cast a spell mechanic, the Mage uses it's want to draw runes in the air to create spells. You can even guide and direct some of those spells after they've been cast. This leads to a very Potter like experience.
There are only a handful of spells in this pre-alpha build but it does look like there are more complex rune combinations on the horizon.
The tracking and logic behind recognizing what rune is being drawn needs some work though. As you can see at the start of the video, drawing random 'runes' like a smiley face, result in an actual spell being cast. In this case I believe it was the shield spell.
Not only can nonsense runes be used to cast spells but it's easy for the system to misread your Fireball rune as a Freezebolt rune as you see at least once in the video. I had more problems off camera. Mostly in the middle of fights while rushing to cast something.
It's not perfect but it's an interesting mechanic. I'd like to see a spell book that you could access to learn/record successful runes. Hell even if I have to draw the rune on the page myself after I learn it. In fact I like that idea more now that I've just thought of it... We should definitely have to write our own spell books.
Back on topic. The Mage has had the least work done since the initial stress test release. I'm curious to see how it evolves in Alpha and Beta.
