Original Soundtrack
A few special notez about this video:
1. The use of "Ghastly Spot" totally works during the first part. But "Symphony of Defeat" is a mess because the music already playing is basically the Shirley Walker Viper version of "Symphony of Defeat" and they're fighting for melody control. I tried to cut around all the existing music without losing any of the dialogue.
2. "Ghosts" is super-nostalgic to me because it's the first Viper episode I ever watched in 94. Back in those simpler days when it aired live, when it was sister shows with SeaQuest, and nobody knew who the hell James McCaffrey was because Max Payne wouldn't exist for another eight years. The first two episodes had already aired when my grandpa told me about this new show. And so an early adolescent obsession was born.
3. Conner REALLY doesn't want to go back to prison. That much is openly established. But also, throughout the episode, there's this ongoing conflict where Conner is constantly taunting Payton/Astor for having the microchip in his brain controlling his personality. There sorta...? kinda...? might be an implication there where Conner is fearful the corrupt Metro cops might do the same thing to him and destroy his whole identity if they ever catch him again. Which means this sequence can be interpreted as Conner saying "I'd rather be dead than end up like you, Hero Dude." MAN the first season gets darker the longer you think about it.
4. When I read and watched Ayashi no Ceres in the early 2000s, it made me look back on this scene and think of it as "Oh. So they basically did the Midori thing but with cars." (i.e. crazed rival girl uses her transforming angel-nymph-demigoddess powers to fly to the top of an office building, and once she's at maximum height, she switches off her powers and free falls so she gets smushed into the pavement in a deliberate attempt to traumatize the main heroine.) I guess there are some other things I can reference from this scene.
5. Pay close attention and you're notice in amazement how Conner's '94 Dodge Stealth magically turns into a '91-'93 Dodge Stealth starting from 0:52 (very likely a leftover prop car that didn't get destroyed in the production of the pilot episode). That poor poor Gen 1 Stealth. My favorite car ever. ;_;
6. How many Stealth R/Ts and Stealth R/T Twin Turbos were damaged, devalued, or otherwise destroyed in the first episode alone, you ask? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSg2qKxhQyI Lots.
