The third significant planetary science mission for NASA's New Frontiers Program is called OSIRIS-REx (after New Horizons launched in 2006 and Juno launched in 2011).

"Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer" is also known as OSIRIS-REx. The mission's objective is to take a sample from the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu (formerly known as 1999 RQ36) that weighs at least 2.1 ounces (59.5 grammes) and return it to Earth.

The project, which was created by researchers at the University of Arizona, will provide further details on how the early solar system originated and how life first started. Additionally, it will improve our comprehension of asteroids that may strike Earth in the future.
