We tried practically everything we could think of to gain an advantage during the Cold War. The huge B-36 bomber with ten engines had to carry a very small fighter, per the request of the Strategic Air Command. The task of creating a tiny fighter and its launching and retrieval mechanism was given to McDonnell Aircraft Company. The Air Force provided the contractor a four engine B-29 to act as the mother ship since a B36 wasn't available. The unconventionally designed XP-85 fighter featured no landing gear, only a skid. The fighter was supposed to be dropped off and picked up from the bomber, not requiring a traditional takeoff or landing.
