The news has been going around that Oumuamua is an interstellar visitor, possibly an alien spaceship. But what is the real truth, and the most likely cause, and why is this even being considered?

Another interesting source: The light curve. It turns out that the period of rotation did vary with time, thus it seems even more likely that outgassing is the answer. https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1712/1712.00437.pdf
