A dream of every Ace Combat player has come true. The main PS2 emulator, PCSX2, has matured enough that Ace Combat Zero (and 5) can be emulated perfectly at higher resolutions resolutions, and with other graphical improvements that make this absolute masterpiece shine like never before. And it is my pleasure and honor to present Zero to you in this gorgeous form.

I never had a PS2. My gateway to Ace Combat was the original PS1 trilogy which even my old laptop could emulate well, and of course, Ace Combat X. Eventually I got a 360, and hell, I even borrowed a PS3 for Infinity. But up until I got this computer, I had never, ever, played any of the so revered PS2 trilogy - I was only able to do so when i got this computer, almost three years ago. The PCSX2 emulator has been able to run AC04, AC5 and ACZ for years, but it suffered from some ugly graphical glitches - flickering ground textures and black lines streaking across the screen. The alternative was to play in software mode, which emulated the game perfectly, but only at its native PS2 resolution and at horribly slow speeds for anyone who doesn't own an i7 CPU - unacceptable for me. I played and enjoyed all three games regardless, as the gameplay worked mighty fine, but of course, I hoped for an improvement.

And it has arrived; the new, post-1.5 development versions (available, but no officially released) apply mipmapping to solve the texture glitching and feature a specific fix for the black lines (which are common to many namco games, actually), which allow us to play 5 and Zero in all its glory - or hell, even better than they were. Sadly, AC04 still suffers from some minor but glaring issues, but hopefully they'll be solved in the future.

Mind you though, it's still not perfect. ACZ pushes the PS2 to its limit, and you WILL see some slowdowns and minor graphics issues, though I've done all in my power to minimize them without sacrificing quality. Further, Glacial Skies is THE most graphically demanding mission in the game (due to the snow), so I had to play it at a slightly lower resolution and mostly in HUD view to maintain 60 FPS. Other missions will look even better - specially the ones focusing on air combat.

Please enjoy.
