Massive Entertainment, the studio behind Star Wars Outlaws, is making use of technology to recreate the iconic look and feel of the original Star Wars trilogy. Set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, the upcoming open-world game strives to emulate the distinctive style of those films.
Creative director Julian Gerighty, in an interview with Edge Magazine, revealed the studio's commitment to capturing the essence of the era. They have developed technology to replicate the aesthetics of a 1970s camera, incorporating features such as vignetting, film grain, lens breathing, and lens flares. These subtle details combine to provide players with a more cinematic experience that echoes the essence of the original trilogy.
Gerighty emphasized the importance of reducing elements to their essential properties, suggesting that these nuanced features contribute to the overall Star Wars experience. To maintain authenticity while avoiding being confined to a specific era, the game's protagonist, Kay Vess, employs technology with an industrial design inspired by the '70s or '80s, yet possessing a timeless quality.
However, achieving this level of detail posed challenges due to the complexities involved in working with such a longstanding and valuable license. Gerighty acknowledged the need to understand the constraints, design philosophies, and principles of creating new elements within the Star Wars universe.
