Outriders Demo - RTX 3070, Max Settings, 4K, 60 fps
The full game version of Outriders is due to be released on April 1st, 2021. The game is currently available as a free downloadable demo showcasing approximately the first hour or so of gameplay. Any progress made during the demo will carry over into the full game should you choose to buy it. The game will also be crossplay across all current generation platforms including Xbox, Playstation and PC.
Outriders is a 1-3 player co-op RPG shooter set in an original, dark and desperate sci-fi universe. As mankind bleeds out in the trenches of Enoch, you’ll create your own Outrider and embark on a journey across the hostile planet. With rich storytelling spanning a diverse world, you’ll leave behind the slums and shanty towns of the First City and traverse forests, mountains and desert in the pursuit of a mysterious signal. It features intense gunplay with violent powers and an arsenal of increasingly twisted weaponry and gear-sets.
While it is still too early to judge the game because it is not yet released, nor has it had time to patch out most bugs during it's final release, I'd like to share a few early Pros and Cons.
Pros:
- The story is very good and compelling. I want to play more to see how it all unfolds.
- The graphics are very good, and feature a lot of original special effects, and alien life forms.
- The variety of guns, gear, and skills has much to offer.
- The controls are pretty precise, and action is frantic and intense.
- Ability cooldowns are fairly quick.
- Choice of four different classes that play completely differently opens up an assortment of play styles.
Cons:
- You'll need a fairly current PC equipped with a GeForce RTX card, or a Next-gen Console like the PS5 or Xbox SX to play the game at full fidelity and smooth 60 frames per second.
- crossplay is not enabled by default. Even after enabling it on both PC and PS5, it did not work for me.
- Cross-save doesn't seem to work yet, as I could not continue my progress from the PC version to the PS5 version and had to start over.
- The game didn't compel me as much as Anthem's Javelin's and being able to wield power similar to Marvel's Iron Man.
- animations feel a bit stiff, like they are manually drawn like Fortnite's character animations rather than being fully motion-captured, and life-like.
- I didn't like the lack of verticality, and not being able to jump or fly. Mantling over objects does not count as being able to freely jump whenever you want. Gears Of War series and The Division series didn't have it either, but those are still fantastic games.
- I encountered a few bugs but they will likely be ironed out and patched in the full game.
- The frame-rate fluctuates from 30 fps during cutscenes and then back to high frame-rate 60+ fps during gameplay and is very jarring.
- The frame rate dipped in a few areas showing that you must have a very beefy computer, or next-generation console for fluidity.
- The PS5 version of the game is using the lowest shadow settings that are selectable in the PC version. This is just one of the applied techniques used on PS5 so that it can hit 60 frames per second.
- There are problems when using a Playstation controller on the PC demo.
- I couldn't delete a created character on PC Steam version.
- button prompts sometimes fluctuated between Xbox and Playstation controller inputs while playing on the PC version. Where a square button prompt should have been, sometimes showed the X button prompt for an Xbox controller.
- I could not fast travel to Shira at the end of the first mission after rescuing Jakub and was stuck meaning that my progress was blocked. I had to exit the mission and return to lobby instead. I found out I missed planting a fast travel flag, but the game doesn't tell you that.
- I could not collect World Tier reward chests.
- Substituting the Playstation controller with an Xbox one solved all of these problems.
