Developed by SEGA AM1 in 1993 for arcades, this is Outrunners. It is the fourth game in the OutRun series and it even got a SEGA Genesis and Mega Drive port in 1994 by Data East.

Outrunners brings back the ability to take different paths through forks in the road, returning to a lighthearted atmosphere similar to first OutRun game, and distanced itself well from Turbo OutRun which didn't have the route selectability.

Unlike previous OutRun games, you have a selection of cars to drive and each car has its own set of a driver and passenger characters, and have their own unique ending vignette if the player makes it to a goal with every car allowing to be driven in either Automatic or Manual transmission.
Do note that each car has a different number gears, if you like playing in manual then car selection might be strategic for the fast times.

You can also change the music mid-race which I believe is the first racing game to this. The only other game that I'm aware of that continued to have that option was Cruis'n USA, a Nintendo licensed game I might add.

The arcade cabinet for Outrunners is a twin sit-down cab that runs on the SEGA System 32 Multi hardware allowing 2 player action and which is a first for the series. But it can also be linked with three other dual cabs to allow up to 8 player multiplayer gameplay.

Now the arcade version from my knowledge does not have any AI racers and you are no longer scored for the distance you travel. It's all about how fast can you get from the first Stage to the Stage 5 in the quickest time.
