Packing a Sega Star Trek Game for the Commodore 64 - Wait, What? 🤯 #nerdculture #retrogaming #r2d2
I kept thinking Atari cartridge! Here's why it took me for a throw seeing Sega. Exhales. Back in the early ’80s, Sega was still finding its footing worldwide. They weren’t just making arcade cabinets and later their own consoles; they were also licensing their properties (and sometimes publishing other properties) onto various home computer platforms, including the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, etc.
Sega published and distributed some titles that weren’t their own IPs, including licensed brands like Star Trek, especially in markets like Europe. They basically acted as a publisher, not just a developer.
So yes, it looks strange today. Sega’s logo on a Commodore 64 box/cart because Commodore was its own competing hardware ecosystem. But at the time, it was more about who got publishing rights, not exclusivity like you’d see in the ’90s console wars. #rantover
