Painting A Frustrating Picture | "Constance" Demo 2 — Playthrough & Feedback (August 2024)
7Constance presents you with a choice upon death: continue from the start of the room that you're in with only 60% health, or return to a savepoint and fight and platform your way back to where you died.
It's a novel and thematic choice, but one I feel will — when coupled with a punishing healing system where you cannot regain charges for healing in combat — ultimately backfire on the game.
Keep in mind this is probably a mechanic that gets expanded on throughout the game, but in the state it is presented in here, it is overly punishing and just plain not fun, which is a shame as otherwise the mechanics, art, and music are wonderful.
As a 2D handdrawn metroidvania, Constance will no doubt suffer many comparisons to the titan of the genre. I normally try and avoid these where possible, but it definitely feels like Hollow Knight does healing better that what is presented in this 45 minute slice of the game.
