Painting Skaven from Zikkit’s Tunnelpack – A Real Beginner’s Experience
Are you a beginner looking to paint Skaven from Zikkit’s Tunnelpack? Or just curious to see what happens when a real beginner takes on these sneaky, stabby rat-men? In this video, I paint my first-ever Skaven warband from the Warhammer Underworlds: Emberguard set—sharing all the fun, frustration, and unexpected surprises along the way!
From battling a tropical cyclone ruining my primer to figuring out the best way to paint warpstone, fur, and rusted metal, this video is an authentic look at what it’s like to paint Skaven as a beginner. No pro-level wizardry here—just realistic results, tips from trial and error, and maybe a few mistakes to learn from!
In this video, I start by building and push-fitting the models, which is a simple but satisfying process. Then, I move on to priming, which turns into a challenge thanks to extreme humidity from a tropical cyclone, resulting in patchy and uneven coverage. From there, I tackle the tricky task of painting Skaven fur, skin, and clothing, working to find the right balance and distinguish the different textures. I use Runelord Brass and Leadbelcher to give their weapons and armor a grimy, battle-worn look, making sure to highlight the intricate details. For the iconic warpstone, I apply Warpstone Glow to bring out that eerie green energy, which is surprisingly easy due to the way the details stand out on these models. Throughout the process, my cat Artemis keeps me company, offering her usual moral support.
