Pak Attack: Carved in Flesh + more by Kona (2002-2003) [BQTN E36 | PC w/ Quakespasm]
(This was originally livestreamed. Breaks have been cut for easier viewing.)
The original plan was to play Carved in Flesh by Kona, then move on to Dawn of Eternity by necros. That plan was altered multiple times, and instead we played 4 paks by Kona, and will play 3 paks by necros in the next episode because Dawn of Eternity is evidently the third in a series.
Paks played in this episode:
0:00 - Carved in Flesh (2003)
1:22:31 - Autumn Haunting (2003) - sequel to CIF with same new enemies and weapons
2:21:38 - Guncotton (2003)
2:43:29 - Nihilore: The Mechanical Empire (2002) - predecessor to Guncotton with same new enemies
The most surprising thing about all of these is that I felt they sometimes suffer from the same linear and repetitive nature that I took issue with in Coven of Ebony. The baffling part is that CoE was by Tronyn, these were by Kona, and yet Rapture - which was by a combination of the two - seemed far more interesting, yet it pre-dates some of these paks!
That being said, these paks do seem to keep you guessing a bit more than CoE, as they like to trigger additional enemies either warping in or coming in from the next room right when you think you're done. Gameplay-wise I thought they were engaging enough, and I liked the texture work; they just felt sometimes way too repetitive in terms of layout design.
Also, a couple of these maps put keys within the same room they're required, or one room away, and that feels awfully like defeating the point of requiring keys at all. I'm left wondering why those particular maps didn't do more with their level design.
