Panel de Pon (SFC) [original version of Tetris Attack]
NOTE: Turn on the CC for some translations.
An unusual title is here, and it is one of my favorite puzzle games, too. If you have seen or played Tetris Attack on the Super NES before (which I do own in original hardware), a game that has NOTHING to do with Tetris itself, this particular game may look very familiar. That is because it is actually a reskin of Panel de Pon featuring Yoshi's Island characters, and the game shown here is that very game, much like what also happened to Sega's Puyo Puyo for Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine in the Genesis. Made in 1995 exclusively on the Japanese Super Famicom, Panel de Pon in its original form was never released outside of Japan until the Switch Online finally gave it a chance 25 years later. However, what I'm playing is the official ROM, so unfortunately it is almost entirely in Japanese. The game itself, when I was a kid, I've always wondered why Tetris Attack's theme felt so feminine and Yoshi very strangely had a woman voice. Turns out, THIS is why; the original cast were literally a unique group of young fairies and the main character - Lip, her goal is to overcome a test to protect her land from a wicked force. Since I love cute things, playing the original version for the first time was WORTH IT.
The 1-player vs mode, I used cheats to make it possible to beat Hard (regrettably not Super Hard) with less effort solely to show the game's ending. The options mode is actually an unused feature I restored in the game due to Game Genie codes. One thing I did notice that the AI in Panel de Pon is actually LESS advanced than in the international Tetris Attack version, as even on the highest difficulty (Lv.7), though it plays intensely, it still does not do any Chains, as seen in the 2 player CPU battles.
Options mode: 0:00-9:44
1 player VS (Story mode): 9:45-28:29
Score Attack: 28:30-32:25
Me vs. Lv.4 CPU: 32:26-44:04
Villain battle (CPU Lv.5): 44:05-49:46
Boss battle (CPU Lv.7): 49:47-55:36
Lip mirror match (vs Lv.4 CPU): 55:37-57:57
Villain Stage Clear level (CPU Lv.7): 57:58-1:01:02
BONUS: What happens when you lose?: 1:01:03-1:01:43
Fun fact: Lip's magic wand appears as an item in the Super Smash Bros series, specifically Melee.
Fun fact 2: The fairy characters in this game, especially Lip, are actually canon in my crossover project, as part of the Mario World cast, though they rarely appear elsewhere.
