Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War ( エ ー ス コ ン バ ッ ト 5 ジ ・ ア ン サ ン グ ・ ウ ォ ーĒsu Konbatto Faibu Ji Ansangu Wō ) ( Ace Combat: Squadron Leader in Europe) is a semi-realistic combat flight video game for Playstation 2. Like other games in Namco 's Ace Combat series, Ace Combat 5 features a game that is a mix between arcade flight andreal flight simulation. The game is developed by Project Aces, an internal Namco group that is in charge of serial developmentAce Combat, and published by Namco in October 2004. A limited number of games were bundled with Hori Flightstick 2 accessories.

Ace Combat 5 features more than 50 licensed real-world fighter jets. Despite this, the events in the game and the setting are set in a fictional world called Strangereal. The main story of the game is set during a war between the fictional nations of Osea and Yuktobania. The story focuses on the player character " Blaze ", an Osea fighter pilot who leads a unit with 4 aircraft named Wardog Squadron. The Unsung War following the activities of this squadron as they try to thwart the Yuktobania invasion of their homeland and try to reveal the truth about the war.

While most of the gameplay in Ace Combat 5 remains the same as the previous game, Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies , some major additions are included in the game. Among these additions are the arcade mode and the ability for players to interact with their peers. However, the multiplayer mode that appeared in the previous game, was canceled during development. The game received generally positive reviews, although critics considered it not a "revolutionary move for the series" as Shattered Skies did.

In September 2018, Bandai Namco announced that Ace Combat 5 will be released for Playstation 4 in 2019, as part of the pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown . Bandai Namco has clarified that the bonus is not a remaster, but a port of the original PlayStation 2, and with a higher resolution on the PlayStation 4.
